Look for a cream — not a gel — built around ceramides, squalane and a humectant such as glycerin, and skip added fragrance if your skin also stings easily. Cleanse, then apply while skin is still slightly damp — damp skin holds the hydration you are sealing in. Warm a pea to almond-sized amount between your fingertips, press it over the face in upward strokes rather than rubbing, and take it down over the neck. Serums go on before moisturizer, oils and SPF after. Morning and night is enough; more product does not mean more hydration.

Three steps cover almost everyone: a gentle cleanser, one targeted serum for your main concern, and a moisturizer matched to your skin type. Add sunscreen in the morning. Once that base is consistent for a few weeks, you can add a treatment such as a peptide serum or a body oil.

Thinnest to thickest: cleanser, then water-light serum, then moisturizer, then oil or balm. In the morning finish with sunscreen; at night finish with your richest cream. Wait roughly thirty seconds between layers so each one settles.
